I haven’t tried it myself, but according to the “Traditional Bowyer’s bible, vol2, chapter 2”, black cherry should be excellent bow wood. Cross checking the mechanical properties at http://www.wood-database.com, it is only slightly inferior to white oak. May need backing, but I intend to try without first and see what happens.
Anyway, I’ll update on the stool once the wood has settled in my shop, and I have started building.
So, now I have transformed some of the wood that I bought, cut and planed it to size and length. It was a lot of hard work, but now it is done. Stock for two pieces are now ready for joining.

The photos how the result after one coat of boiled linseed oil. I intend to put on a few layers of shellac later. The joints turned out pretty good. Not perfect, but hey. Probably no other than me who will ever notice.
So, what did go wrong? I glued up the two short end first. On one of them, I had flipped the lower rail. The housing joint was on the outside, which made it pretty useless. After a couple of minutes of despair (the PVA glue had dried overnight), I started to pound it with my biggest mallet. After a lot of released aggression, the joint gave up. A few splinters came loose around the tenons, but I managed to get them back in place again. Lots of work with the card scraper and sand paper made it almost as good as before.
This lesson taught me several things.
1. Pay attention when you glue up. Things will go wrong.
2. It is possible to get a PVA joint apart.
3. I am no longer concerned about the strength of PVA glue. It took a lot of effort to get it moving.- This reply was modified 8 years, 1 month ago by kjellhar.

If it had been an apprentice test, I don’t think it would have passed, but it did pass wife approval, which mean it is certainly good enough for most people.
At least I am very proud of it.
Thanks to everyone here for support and nice comments.
