Over the holidays I’ve been working on making some hand planes. I received a couple 1 3/4 inch hock plane irons from Santa and went down to the lumber yard and bought a length of 2 inch beech.
The plane is about 9 inches long and is a dedicated smoothing plane so the throat is filed very tight.
Along with it I made a small brass adjusting hammer out of some 5/8 brass and a scrap piece of mahogany I had left over from my bread board end cutting board project.
I’ve got two more planes to make, one is a compass plane and a jointer.

The Hock blades are well recommended, I have a couple and I’m sure yours won’t disappoint.
I know Mr Sellers has made a couple of plane-making videos and it’s something I’ve wanted to try for a while. Did you use any other resources to help with this build?
I look forward to seeing the other two.
Thanks Matthew, the blade style is used with the krenov style plan he is so famous for. It’s a simple build, but you need to ensure the bed is dead flat and true. The rest is pretty much up to you in terms of shaping. I’ve seen these planes as simple square blocks to all manner of shapes. As this is a dedicated smoother it’s not going to be used for rough work.
Thanks for the comments folks.
@gman3555 thanks Greg, more to come. I’m catching up on a long list of homemade shop tools right now!
@george here is a photo of the work in progress compass bottom plane, the shavings are from the plane I made. The block of beech will form the middle body of the compass plane and will be cut at a 45 and 60 degree angle to form the bed and opening. The bottom and sides need to be dead true and square. I wanted to try the plane out and the result is as good as my veritas #4.
@ant11samagaio. Both the compass and jointer will be similar style as the smoothing plane.Attachments:

@daveg I haven’t built the jointer plane yet, the above is a smoothing plane. The compass plane is going to have a gentle radius for planing curved surfaces, nothing specific in mind but perhaps a chair seat or two. I can always make another for a specific job if needed.
