Ok, it’s not a woodworking project but i’ll be making a nice display stand or cabinet for it later and I thought some of you might be interested.
About two years ago, I made a Vader mask so it could be auctioned off for charity. Since I still have the moulds I made I have since made a mask and helmet for my nephew but I have never got around to making one for me. I started to correct this oversight today. The mask is cast from AC100 Jesmonite, a water based acrylic that’s a bit like fibre glass but without the health hazards. There’s a lot of work ahead filling in the air holes and making good but you can see the overall character already there. I’ve included two photos: one is my latest casting and the other is the original, finished Vader that I made for auction. I’m proud to say it raised a significant amount towards fighting cancer and for the local Air Ambulance.

What kind of time does it take to get to the finished product?
Once you’ve made the molds each Vader takes about six weekends: cast up, final shaping, prep and prime, top coat, make the lenses/grill work etc and fit then make the mask and helmet attachment and give it all a final polish. You also have to put in a few “tells” that you’ll be able to spot so you can guard against pekoe recasting your work and selling it as their own.
If you’re starting from scratch and need to sculpt your molds though, you’re looking at about another six months of research and sculpting. Fortunately, Brian Muir ( the man who made the original Vader) is on Facebook and is prepared to answer questions when he has time.I’m glad you like it. Thanks.
I’ve got two of them on the go at the moment. I like to get all my fibreglass work out of the way in the summer so I can work in the garden. I tried using Jesmonite instead of resin but the results just rant the same. There’s a bit more info on these builds on my website http://www.spicket.co.uk .
