i have a red deal(pine) stairs ,the varnish on the steps are worn and tired looking .my plan is to sand give them a coat or two of general finishes (java) gel stain, seal with a coat of dewaxed shellac and then apply a couple of coats of water based floor varnish .does anyone see an issue with this ?? besides the sanding i hope to complete this project in 3 days as i need my stairs back in use .for example how soon can i apply shellac after stain? should i sand first? do i need to sand coat of shellac before floor varnish .?any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance.
