When plowing a grove with a stanley#50 you are limited in the dept of cut to 3/8″ in depth. But if you make a spacer to go over the depth stop screw you can change the point of contact where the wing nut locks up. You are limited because the wings will bottom out on the board. So by spacing the nut out you will change the point of contact alowing the nut to tighten at 90deg to the board. Now you can run the dept stop all the way down and get a 1/2″ deep cut.
