Hi, I’m a relative newcomer and I’ve inherited a Stanley No. 4 1/2 plane from my Dad.
It has grooves all along the length of the sole of the plane.
Are these significant and what is their purpose please anyone?
Just that I’ve not seen one like it before.photo attached
Cheers

8 February 2016 at 5:43 pm #134648Thanks Scott, I really should have had a look first shouldn’t I.
But that does confirm my concern about damaging wood if it slipped in one of the grooves.
And I’ve thought of a new song for my band. “Your Corrugated Soul”?Ta for the link.
Rob9 February 2016 at 11:46 pm #134675Best of luck with it Rob but if it were mine I thnk I’d give it a go and if not happy with it then either a new cheapy or like me, get a £20 quid Stanley from ebay and fettle it. Say an hour’s work and you have a plane for life. Atb.
10 February 2016 at 12:59 pm #134694My number 5 is corrugated, as is my Sargent 18C. So far I haven’t caused any damage with them! I wouldn’t trade them if I could, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that I rescued them from the scrap heap.
Another option: I purchased an older Stanley #4C (corrugated) several years ago when I was just getting started. Over time, I decided that I would rather have a smooth sole, so I watched on eBay and within a week had found a replacement smooth sole of the same vintage. Best of all, it just cost a few dollars. A few minutes swapping out parts and fettling and I had a great plane that I’m still using today. Best of luck!
