Hi all,
When I’m scraping with the Stanley 80 scraper plane I get really annoying high pitch noise while pulling backwards (plane cutter on the wood)
Just wanted to verify if this is normal and if I should get used to lifting off the cutter/plane off the wood on back draw. Or have I set or sharpened the scraper incorrectly.
My scraper cutter bevel is 45 degrees and has a very little “burr”
Thanks in advance
Jake
Just to be clear – your cutting on the push stroke and getting the noise when pulling back to get ready for the next stroke? I don’t have lots of experience with this, but it seems that Paul Sellers lifts a little when pulling back. I believe I do this, too. See if you can find a video of him using a #80 to check it out.
If nothing else, oil the sole. That could help.
Thank you Matt! I will take a look. I think Paul uses that tool in the cabinet making episode. That mahogany had awkward grain.
Anyhow, oiling helped a little but lifting off eliminated the noise completely. I think I’ll train myself to lift it off. Only take a couple of strokes to get used to.
Cheers
Paul’s teaching assistant, Logan, frequently advised me to lift the scraper blade from the work on the return stroke to keep from dulling it. Sometimes it looks like Paul does that, other times it doesn’t. I suspect he keeps the toe registered on the piece on the back stroke and lifts the blade just a hair to keep it off the wood.
Thanks Ed! Yes, that’s how I lift off—keeping the toe in tact and heel slightly up. What a fine tool the scraper is 🙂 totally worth the technique!
