Fellow woodworkers,
I have a Stanley #5 bench plane which works fine, except the fact that I cannot retract the blade fully so no shavings are taken. I believe this is due to the fact the opening in the cap iron ends up too far away from the cutting edge – maybe the cap iron is from a different plane?
I have mounted the cap iron below 1mm from the cutting edge and retracted the frog as far back as possible – both helped a bit, but the lever connected to depth adjustment nut does not fully engage before the nut hits the casting and stops turning.
First intrusive solution that crossed my mind – I could shorten the cap iron to effectively reduce distance between cutting edge and the cutout in which the lever engages. Probably I would have to bend the cap iron to keep it in contact with the cutting iron…
Second solution would be to enlarge the cutout (move it forward) and somehow shorten it on the other side – maybe braze/weld something in?
Maybe someone had similar problem and solved it in a less intrusive way? Or maybe another solution exists? I could also get another iron/cap iron combo, but that probably means getting another plane…

Well, since nobody else has commented, I’ll try.
I have a number of Stanley planes and none of them have the angle gage stamped on the cap iron. If they have a stamp, it’s on the blade.
However, my Record #4 has the angle stamp on the cap iron, which is identical to the one on yours. SO, I think you actually have a cap iron and maybe the blade from a Record plane installed on your Stanley and this may be the root of your problem.
There are a number of sources for the blade/cap iron set to fit your Stanley, so you shouldn’t have to buy a plane for parts.
If you could indicate your location, others posting here may be able to help with a source.

Craig7 December 2013 at 6:06 pm #23248I think Craig is right. You’ve got a “parts plane” with parts from at least two different types of plane. The good news is cap irons are pretty easy to find on ebay. If you can’t find one at a good price let me know and I’ll check the parts bin for a decent one.

I can easily get a brand new plane iron for a modern Stanley here in Poland, but cap irons are not available (at least in online stores selling planes).
I’ll keep on watching ebay.

I tried a couple of UK sources online but all seem to be out of stock.

Craig30 December 2013 at 9:01 am #24792I have found a nice deal on a new iron + cap iron combo on ebay – now the plane works perfectly! I didn’t try to move the frog forward yet – I just haven’t found a need to do that yet.
