A good friend of mine has kindly given me his grandfather’s Stanley Victor 20 Compass Plane.
It’s in pretty good condition for its age. I think the frog has been repaired at some point in the past, but they seemed to have done a good job with that repair.
Also, one end of the sole is held on with a screw, and one with a pin. Not sure which is correct?
I’d like to take the plane apart to restore it, but I don’t know how.
Can anyone tell me how I get the sole off? If I can get that off I can work the rest out, but I just can’t see how to do it.
Thanks
Darren.
Darren,
Congrats with your find. Hope you have fun with the tool.
Just take your sharpening skills up a notch and the tool will work fine. Get the adjuster freed up so you can spin it while you are using it to dial in on a radius. Being able to do that was a great advantage to the tool.
And start planing how you will display the thing in your shop ;).
If you pull the pin and the screw, won’t the sole slide sideways out of the dovetail slot?
