Hi!! What kind of steel Paul is using to make plane blade? Propably i misunderstanding something watching and earing videos due to my poor english. On line i saw tool builders using o-1 steel. My problem concerns o-1 steel: here in italy it’s not wide used; here people use c70 or k720 for knife making. What stell shall i use? thank you
22 April 2014 at 11:59 pm #56357Paul was using O-1 tool steel for his blade as do many tool makers like Ron Hock, maker of a line of premium replacement blades. I think the problem you are running into is that many of the steel designations used come from the AISI (American iron and steel institute) hence they are not used by all countries. There are many steels that are suitable for plane iron however. I suggest you contact trade sources in Italy and ask for a simple high carbon tool steel with .7 to 1.0 percent carbon and as few other elements as possible. Oil hardening is preferable. Steel manufacturers generally supply technical information about their products that includes hardening directions.
Generally speaking, steels that work well for knives are suitable for plane irons and chisels however, most (many) custom knife makers prefer to use a stainless tool steel for their blades and that may present problems for your plane project. Not to drown in details, but the heat treating would be difficult to do in your backyard barbeque.
Hope this helped a bit.Cheers
