Built this double step stool over the weekend. The steps are dovetailed to the sides and the stretchers have a half dovetailed joint on the front while the back stretcher is dovetailed to provide lateral support. I can’t remember where I saw this stool but it’s pretty solid.
I’m going to put one coat of shelac and then some barn red milk paint with a couple coats of wipe on poly.

You did a really good job with this one Dave.7 October 2014 at 1:13 pm #119090Yes definitely Shaker. Great job. Submit a pic after you paint it….
10 October 2014 at 3:29 am #119279Looks nice Dave. One note of caution; like any other “ladder’ the top rung can be a bit tricky. When standing on the top step, be careful that it does not fall forward. I “read” about someone having this happen!
Cheers,
John10 October 2014 at 4:14 am #119283It looks like the 2 step stool in Fine Woodworking’s Quick & Easy Projects. I’ve wanted to build it, but so far it is low on the project to-do list. You did a very nice job on yours.
11 October 2014 at 11:32 pm #119384Great idea Dave; I should have known you had that covered! My Dad made a little step stool about thirty years ago for my kids but they couldn’t really use it because of that problem. I still have that and can now modify it for our grandchildren. Thanks for your reply to my comment.
