Here’s the exam piece from the end of last year in the carpentry apprenticeship, brought back with five minutes notice last week as it was that or let the college use it for firewood.
The almost identical step behind is from a mock exam in late 2013. Strangely despite this years attempt fitting better than the previous attempt, and making it about four hours faster, I still ended up with a lower grade. I think this was because I’d used several methods I’d learned here and the examiners were concerned that I was showing dangerous levels of initiative by using non-guild approved methods.
On the other hand I managed to get a fairly good grade in the multiple choice theory exam despite failing to understand several questions and simply circling answers at random.
Less than a year to go, thank goodness.

[/quote]I spit out my coffee when I read this…. Hilarious. 🙂
You made my day
This was exactly the reason I hated school…
27 September 2014 at 11:25 am #118573“those that can do those that can’t teach” thankfully that doesn’t apply here (on this site) but unfortunately it does happen a lot in education if you dont do it their way its wrong .
And here I thought the world likes faster and better. Maybe not guilds then.
You should push to be an examinator yourself, time to upgrade the guilds.
Perhaps you should try and get a copy of the exam regulations and follow those once. Just on the exam.
Hang in there, you’d get A grade if it were up to me…

Dave: I’m glad it brighened up your day. I think the main goal of the college is to make us obedient little drones so we won’t complain too much (which considering the working conditions and pay scales is probably needed). Unfortunately I’m not playing by their rules…
Eddy: In the case of the guild I think that is true: I doubt many of them can make dovetails these days as they’ve been working commercially for a very long time. Again, I think the main goal is to make obedient drones.
Diego: Thanks for the grade. In the photograph you can’t see the mistakes I made, but it wasn’t that bad in my opinion, certainly I think I deserved better. I can’t become an examiner because I’d need to waste 2 years and €15 -20 000 on getting a pointless masters qualification.
Also, following their rules I wouldn’t havd finished the exam on time: it was Peter’s method with the extra piece of wood placed behind the first cut that made a massive difference, much faster then marking everything out twice…
when in doubt circle “C”. As a firefighter/paramedic I took many governmental exams for certifications I needed and wanted. One thing is for sure many of the questions have little or nothing to do with actually doing the job. We used to joke and say that on the final paramedic state exam we all took, there was no difference between someone who got a 70 percent or a 95 percent on the test, they both got their licenses.
7 October 2014 at 12:41 am #119033I know what you fell like I also am fed up of the OFFICAL way to do things. The bit that make me laugh is when you ask WHY you have to do it their way your marks go from 70% to 35% very quickly. That idea is still very strong in research as I know to well. The thing about it is that the person who is discovering the new method is often better than the one only using the old outdated methods. They only keep them around to keep their jobs.
