Paul,
If you have any influence with Lee Valley or Woodcraft in the states, perhaps you could request that they start carrying the Thorex/Vaughn hammers. On that note, if we all petitioned a vendor that we can all agree upon, we could probably get them to carry the hammers and possibly at a decent price. My thought is to start with Lee Valley. Anyone?
Thanks,
JasonPaul cited this website in one of his blog posts on hammers. They seem to have the Thorite and Vaughan hammers, and many replacement tips.
I got the craftsman 12 oz hammer just like the estwing one above but with a better colour scheme from sears in the usa.
I checked out that hammer as well. Nice hammer and a two bucks cheaper. At the time, it was clearly marked “Made in USA”, but Sears had other sizes (head painted in a lighter grey color, IIRC) that were imported.
Lee valley does offer a similar mallet, they call it cabinetmaker’s mallet, but it’s a bit pricey…

That’s the mallet I use and I’m very happy with it.
I did send Lee Valley’s customer service a note about the mallet, and referenced Paul’s blog. They forwarded my email to the “product review committee” to consider my suggestion. They made the comment that many of the products that they carry are because people wrote them and asked. I imagine the more people that contact them, the more likely they will carry it.
Jason
I stopped by Lowes to check their soft faced hammer http://www.lowes.com/pd_117368-16878-62772_4294857565__?productId=4776997&Ns=p_product_qty_sales_dollar|1&pl=1¤tURL=%3FNs%3Dp_product_qty_sales_dollar%7C1&facetInfo=
and I found it to hard, not enough difference warrant the purchase. Going to look for a softer head.
I did get my Thor 712 in the mail and it’s very nice, minus the grip part. I can see why @paul-sellers removed it. It is very uncomfortable.
The yellow end I could see denting pine but the red end I am surprised to here that. I haven’t had to really wack a pine project to hard but it might need to loosen up a bit hitting it on a concrete floor a few times might work. Until it becomes softer you might want to use a scrap on pine.
