Why do I get tear out in the recesses between the pins when dovetailing?
Brianjs answer should be repeated: sharpen your chisel, don’t hammer too hard. Some softer wood types have quite strong annual rings and the softer parts in between tear our easily. In that case sharpen even more. And sharpen often too!

On soft woods I sharpen my chisels at a steeper angle, like 20-25 degrees, for this task specifically. Seems to work for me.

Personally I have always have tear out in the recesses when in soft wood like pine. When I try to take as many flips and chops as possible then I end up with just a small bit of tear out right in the center. Hard wood I dont get tear out unless I hit too hard with the hammer and the woods pops out prematurely.
