Firewood is best to practice for handplanes. Make sure they are dry. The firewood piece I used for that plane was used after few months and it wasnt probably dry full. It was acting strange for a long time. I noticed it was the sole where the blade is laying got out of flatness later (convex).
Wow, these are some nice boxes. I really like the finish and the play with different kind of woods.
I must say I think those pieces are just stunning; you are a very talented woodworker. If I ever get to produce pieces even half as good as those I’ll die a happy woodworker.

Ed, I use two thimbers that were left from the construction of the balcony roof years ago. I use 2 clapms so they stay put. For the stops I use pegs when I plane bigger pieces so they wont wumble especialy when I use a scrub plane across the grain. Also when chiseling is usefull.
It evloved over the years depending on what I needed the most :). Its simple but does alot of the job untill I make a real table.
