Nothing better than lumber on sale! I think the contrast is going to look very good.
It’s been a productive weekend, joined the two pieces for the panel and scrubbed them down to thickeness and then took my cabinet scraper to a final finish. Glued up the frame and installed the panel. I put one coat of tried and true Danish oil on the panel and frame.
Today I spent most of the day installing hinges, 5 for the lid and 3 for the panel and glued in the bottom ledger.

Paul always says: care about your project!
Well, I can really see your love for what you do: this is very inspiring. 🙂
Thank you for posting.11 March 2014 at 2:17 am #28816Beautiful use of the grain Dave, can’t wait to see the whole thing together.
Cheers
Thanks! Getting closer, sort of. Finished the hinge recesses on both the inner panel, lid and main box. Its sort of an unconventional way to install the lid with the barrels down and flush to the back of the box but it works.
I finished up the panel by installing the flush bolts which are used to secure the inner panel to the inside of the lid.
Before I hang it, I have install all the twiddly bits 🙂 Saw hanger supports, tool rests or whatever they are called…and sort out how I am going to orient my saws inside the panel.
Last but not least I have to install lid supports on the back, the design uses the lid supports with a 5 degree angle to ensure the lid stays open and the panel won’t flop down even if the flush bolts are open.

I’ve applied one coat of oil to all faces of the lid and panel. Tonight I finished up setting all the hardware for the flush bolts and installing the knob for the panel. I took my pocket knife and hand carved the little knob out of a small piece of rosewood, I sat on the corner of the tool chest and spent a good hour and a half whittlin’ away at it.
Now it’s about laying out the arrangement for my saws inside this lid and applying a few more coats of oil.

Getting ever closer now…I like how the tools look resting in the lid there…it has “Craftsman” written all over it.
Good job, Dave.
Lid is hung with lid supports installed at the back of the chest. The lid supports hold the lid open just past 90 deg. Now it’s on to getting the panel installed and the saws fitted inside. Then it’s on to finishing up the interior tills. Have a few trays to build.
