I am building a round top style chest and I am hoping to keep the finish as close to the finishes that would have been used traditionally especially for travel by boat.

    From what century?

We have in the family 3 family chests that date from 1940, 1890, and 1870.
The only finish any of them have ever had is probably BLO.

But I have seen milk paint and black – probably some sort of tar pitch on historic boats like the Charles W. Morgan.

Yeah, what Larry said, and also, “from what continent”? Traditional Asian round-top chests have existed for centuries as well.
