I’ve been experimenting with presentation boxes for turned pens. Here’s a couple of my first tries at it. I used the router table to machine the grooves in the one on the left and used the drill press for the holes for the pin hinges. Other than that, all hand work. Both are walnut and the one on the right has a maple burl top.

30 January 2015 at 1:23 pm #124103The burl suprised me, in that it actual planed with very tearout. I used my small bevel up smoother, with a very light cut and a very sharp blade with the mouth closed quite tight. I finished it off with a cabinet scraper and a light sanding. There are a couple of small bark inclusions, but that adds a bit of visual interest.
I finished both of them with 3 coats of Tried and True varnish oil, topped with paste wax. I wanted to contrast the burl, so I buffed it with a hard carnuba wax for a high gloss.

What do you use for the red felted interior?
30 January 2015 at 11:36 pm #124132I used Suede-Tex. I got it from Lee Valley.

31 January 2015 at 12:26 am #124136Hey Peter, those are really great looking. There are some really lucky people in your future if you give them away. Are those little barrel hinges that you used?
1 February 2015 at 5:31 pm #124199The hinges are what Lee Valley sells as “brass pin hinges”. They work quite well, but the holes have to be drilled in precisely the right position and very close to the correct depth for best results. I used the drill press on these boxes. I’m feeling more confident in my layout and hand tool usage so I’m going to try doing the next set with my eggbeater drill.
I’m going to try some more variations of the boxes with different wood, different interiors etc. I’m looking for a hand tool friendly way of “french fitting” the pen into the box. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
