I noticed that Paul had a new Vice on his new workshop bench is that in Irwin quick release vise? And what was the old one that he had behind the bench all these years? On the internet there’s a lot of postings of leg vises the roubo Style. As well as the noxon vise.
Hi Charles
From the FAQ linked to the intro page for the workbench build:
Which vise does Paul use?
A: Paul uses a 9″ Eclipse Quick Release Vise in this series. He decided on this as the 9″ is easier for the majority of people to handle. He has extensively used old Record vises which are no longer made to the same standard. See more here.
It would probably be wise to read all the FAQ before you contemplate a build.
I have the 10″ Eclipse vise and IMO, it’s great. Very solid/heavy and has held its own through quite a bit of use. Only things about it I don’t like are the titanium handle (Eclipse says it’s a safety feature to bend when under too much stress, but I think that’s more of an excuse for inferior materials. Haven’t had issue with bending, it’s hard to overtighten, so you should be fine.), and the paint tends to chip a bit if bumped hard. That part is purely cosmetic though.
Eclipse vice is a great tool, better than a third Hans as it holds tighter and I can cut toward it. I was amazed at how much it helps
