Hi,
I think it’s for drawing parallel lines.
I found a similar thing here http://www.draftingsteals.com/folding-parallel-rulers.html.
Parallel rule. Mostly used for plotting course on navigational charts, but can come in handy for all sorts of layout work.
What Greg said is spot on, was taught to use them. With a sexton in the servace it’s for chart plots ect, they where in common use into the 1960 when radio and satellite navigation took over, it is still taught in some schools like West point.
Frank is spot on, and they are still used today for plotting on charts, even electronic charts, old habits die hard with some skippers.
thanks guys, its a bit strange it turning up in a box of rusty tools but I’m sure I’ll find a use for it
