Hi . I hope I’m not breaking any protocols herebut I posted this on the tail end of s.th and I thinks it’s lost. So..Regarding aprons guys. I’ve laminated e.thing *(and also have all the top done)
However one of the aprons/the well (they’re all the same dimensions -3 lengths of 2.4m x2x4’s) has twist.
I’ve been trying to get my head around where exactly I neeed to plane as not all have twisted but have, I think, satisfactorily flattened one side.
Then I turned it over! Needless to say this is the last one!
Hmm… should I begin to level this out too or leave it for later?
I’ve watched all the vids up to here and may have missed s.th.
cheersPaul’s recent video on flattening the panels for the joiners tool chest shows the use of winding sticks. You need to make yourself a pair or pairs. I’d suggest a couple pair. A set of 16 inch and another set at 24-30 inch. These are invaluable tools for flattening boards and glued up panels. Go to Paul’s blog and do a search for winding sticks, there’s a step by step on making them.

They’re cheap, light (in the case of the aluminum), and quite accurate. The extra length is particularly helpful when working with long wide pieces as with the workbench.
Personally I am using two pieces of angle iron I found in my cellar, they do a great job, even if they are a little heavy.

I’m continuing today and hope to get on to the legs.17 January 2015 at 11:27 am #123599Hi Nick, these are my very cheap winding sticks. They’re aluminium angles. One of the two has a yellow adhesive strip (to easily reveal any discrepancy of the surface when the sticks are placed on a board).

that’s also a very nice table those sticks are sitting on !18 January 2015 at 12:41 pm #123637I use my angle iron with the corner up. Is this unusual? I just figured it’d better support the back to keep it straight.
20 January 2015 at 7:23 am #123699Mooncabbage, I think it’s not unusual or wrong. It’s a good option instead. I’ve never used sticks with the corner up just because I’m pretty sure they are straight.
I use the corner to check the flatness on long surfaces, because the corner has no bends even when you push the stick down.20 January 2015 at 10:18 am #123711Interesting concept Emilio. I know for a fact my winding sticks AREN’T straight, after what’s probably the better part of a decade leaning up against a wall in my cellar. They’re consistently not straight though, so they function quite well as winding sticks, if you know what to test for. Will eventually be replacing them though.
