Hello, all!
As I was completing my workbench, I thought that I could do with a jointer plane. After cruising e-bay, I found and purchased a Stanley #7 (type 8). Unfortunately, I did not see that the blade that came with it isn’t even the right size! I don’t know where to get the right sized blade for a #7. I am not interested in buying a thick Hock blade. It would be nice to get a regular Stanley blade.
I performed a search on this web site to see if the topic of where to buy plane blades came up. I did not see anything, so I figured I would give it a go here in these forums. Does anyone have any recommendations as to where I can buy a blade for this plane?
6 August 2017 at 8:11 pm #314346I wouldn’t know, but how abut this idea – why not make your own? There’s a video out there where Paul makes his own plane, including the blade. If you can get your hands on the right steel, a BBQ, a hair drier, a half pint of olive oil and some elbow grease you’ll have a hand crafted C. Grenier blade!

6 August 2017 at 9:39 pm #314349They are just 2 & 3/8″ (60mm) the same as No.4 & 1/4, No.5 & 1/2 and No6 and are easily found both new and secondhand.
I hope that helps you find one more easily.

Craig
Curtis,
In the US, here:http://www.stanleytoolparts.com/beplcu.html
And the #4 is 2″ not 2 3/8″.
Stanley put some clear coat on the blades that’s difficult to get off, but you’ll need to do that to not gum up your sharpening stones. I soaked mine in strong paint stripper and still had to use a coarse wire wheel!
Highly recommend the Hock replacement along with the chipbreaker.
Best,
CraigCurtis,
My previous link shows out of stock.
Go here:

A search of: Stanley 12-315-1 shows other suppliers.

Thanks for the link. It will be good to replace this blade and make this plane functional. That is the cheapest price I have seen so far!
The plane came with a 2 1/4 EC Simmons Keen Kutter that is all bent out of shape. Needless to say, it is pretty much useless to me. Interestingly, I did a little research and found out that the blade had to have been made before 1940, when the company was bought out by a competitor. Again, useless information but interesting, nonetheless.
BTW: You’re in SW Pennsylvania? I moved to Pittsburgh 2 years ago.
