The weight depends on you. I made my daughter in law a very light mallet, and it worked as good as the heavy maple one i built. Accuracy of the blow, and chisel sharpness is more important than weight as far as i can see. This is from building furnature not timber framing.
4 December 2017 at 6:23 pm #393476Since I already made one mallet, I thought I’d try the hammer that our mentor uses in virtually every video he has done. Until someone has done this for a while, they don’t really know what they like to use. I was looking for a guideline regarding a specific item Paul uses repeatedly.
Those suggesting that I find what works for me should realize that is exactly what I’m doing.- This reply was modified 6 years, 4 months ago by Keith Szczepanski.

A RED Stanley Knife improves cutting over the old SILVER one.
Someone even asked ‘What type of watch does Paul wear when chiselling?’ (I kid you not)
I’m going to ask Paul’s wife where she buys his shirts.
I want a packet of ‘McCoy’s Beefy Crisps’ too.You can laugh all you like, but all the OP asked was what weight mallet Paul was using. It wasn’t a silly question and people shouldn’t be discouraged from asking things. Some people never ask for fear of being heckled and sarcastic replies to others can put them off from ever asking.
For the particular question here, when I started, I just went and bought the first joiners mallet I could find. After all, it was “just a hammer.” (Actually, it was a mallet, not a hammer.) It sucked. I tossed it. Waste of money. Sometimes people don’t think something is magic, they just don’t have the money to waste trying until they find something, so they’re just trying to match something that seems to work.
Hey Keith,
Paul has several blogs on hammers, in one he states that he has the Thor 712 with both wooden and nylon handles and likes them equally. In another blog about the nylon handled version he specifically states that although there are many weight options the 1 1/2 pound is his favorite.
That said, I purchased the Thor 712R 650g off Amazon and I love it. Slightly less than 1 1/2 lbs. but perfect for me. I also have the Vaughan SF12 12 ounce hammer and love it. It doesn’t pack quick the same punch as the Thor but provides plenty of striking power and a little better finesse. I think you can’t go wrong with either.
