Evening all,
I’m looking to upgrade my bevel edged chisels and I’m liking the reviews on the Ashley Iles but I keep finding different info on whether they are appropriate for mortise work. Just trying to see what you fine people with personal experience with these chisels think? Also are there other chisels that people would recommend?
I have a set of the AI chisels, I’ve found them to be excellent. They’re fine for mortising providing you’re a bit careful, especially with the thinner ones. I’ve just cut eight 1/4” mortises for a couple of panels and the chisel worked very well.
I’ve heard the Narex chisels are good as well.

I bought them and like them a great deal. I might not mortise with the 1/4″ but honestly haven’t tried because I have a 1/4″ Narex, so why take a chance?
Some mortice chisels (e.g. Lie-Nielsen, Ece) have flat sides. When used with a guide, that property goes a long way to improve my mortising.
Robert Sorby chisels I believe were used in some of the early WWMC projects. Mine required a bit of preparation before use.
