Tagged: workbench aprons
I’ve continued to progress, very slowly due to many other projects that came in between, but final glue up done this evening. Next is planing the top, oiling the bench and installing the vices ( a very old record onze and a brand new Veritas inset vice. And then I’m done (perhaps a drawer at a later stage).
Flattened my bench and installed the record vice today. Was a bit more difficult because of the ribs the vice has (see pictures). Now the veritas inset vice and applying the finish and all done! I also have an old record bench stop, I may install that as well.
This may sound like a silly question but my current workbench was built without a front or rear apron. I am planning a new bench but don’t understand the purpose/advantage of the front and rear aprons. Would someone be able to enlighten me?
Many Thanks
Doug
Here’s Paul’s post that explains this:https://paulsellers.com/2012/06/making-the-workbench-11/
My Grandfather was one of the finest woodworkers in NW Pa. He never put any tool down on a work bench. He kept them where they belonged because they were very expensive, and planes and chisels could get chipped. He was very methodical when he worked and was always thinking ahead of the game. I learned how to fly using that same method, thinking where I’ll be not where I am. I’m the same with my tools and I find myself giving self scoldings for laying anything on a workbench therefore I don’t need a well to collect dirt.
Keep your tools and yourself sharp!
