Looks great! I really like the dividers. Well done.
I’m working on a drawer in almost exactly the same spot right now. Dovetails are done but I don’t have the wood for the bottom on hand so I’m mulling over other aspects of it. How is your drawer supported? I can see a glimpse of something in the second picture but I’d love to know how it’s attached to the bench.
Hey @radar thanks for the kind comments.
I’ve put some support beams in under the bench with some guides for the draw to slide in and out on. I’ll take a picture and post in a bit. I felt the draw was too thin to route guides into the side of the draw so instead it just sits on the support beams and has guides either side to make sure it doesn’t move to the left or the right when pushed in. The wood on wood is a good feeling and the supports are made from pine which is a lot cheaper than the oak used in the draw. I need to make a draw for a bigger project and having never made one before I thought I’d use the workbench for a test piece.
Note: I wasn’t brave enough to go for hidden dovetails for my first draw. But I think showing the construction on such a functional peice is probably not the end of the world :-).
I put the deviders in as I wanted to compartmentalise the draw to allow me to keep my square, tape measures, marking knives and pencils in the very front as I need to reach for these every time I start work. I was going to go for three compartments at the back but felt that they would end up too small so ended up going for splitting the back into two compartments instead.
Good luck with your draw and post some pics when you’re done. Oh for my base I used a sheet of 6mm ply board I had kicking around this was very easy to work with as it’s so uniform and stable. Just thought I’d mention this if you had some around. I also found it easier to shoot through the dovetails when routing the groove for the draw base and then peg the four small holes after. There would have only been two holes if the dovetails were hidden. I found this easier than trying to do a stop grove.
that’s really good, I don’t know if you’ve seen but I’ve made some drawers in the end of my workbench and posted it on here, I also plan to make an apron drawer like yours, the only thing putting me off is I may add some holdfasts at some point, and the drawer might get in the way, how many hours do you think you sunk into this project?
