almost a year busy with my workbench with long pauses between it π now i want to finish it.
– top / apron laminated
– h-frame have just been glued. (boy my mortise and tenons are bad, think i need to support them with some extra screws….)now i’m looking in pauls artisan book and DVD. Noticed that the book and dvd are different on the size of the bearers?
When I read the page i uploaded, it says: make the bearer 1″ shorter; on each side 1/2″.
But how does this work with the apron that have dadoes? Dont they need to rest on the bearer? On the second 3 model image it also seems the bearers are flush with the H frame?
Not sure what to do?

So is the book/dvd wrong?
6 September 2017 at 8:07 pm #315600There’s obviously not a “wrong” way to do it. Either way works. One way the apron sits on the bearer. The other, it sits on the leg. Pick one and have fun.
6 September 2017 at 8:37 pm #315602I assumed something like that.
But indeed the book is wrong as on the next page it tells to account for the height of the top AND the bearer + 1/16″.
That is only the case when you dont make the bearer shorter as the top rail. And dvd shows even different kind of method where the sides of the bearer are chopped of.
But i know Paul is not so keen on this older book of him.
What i know is he is working on new book/dvd just on workbenches. Looking forward to that!
Thanks for the clarification!

29 September 2017 at 6:59 pm #325707Finally after 3 weeks work I have finished my workbench and made a wall for tool storage.
Happy to finally start working on some more delicate furniture things!
But loved getting my workshop ready!Removed my old oak dining table. Maybe can reuse that wood for new projects!

2 October 2017 at 9:50 am #327027Nice job and looking at it I guess you are left handed like me. Just out of interest how long is it. Mine is just about five feet as I am strapped for space. You don’t seem to be but it looks about the same size as mine.
2 October 2017 at 10:07 am #327028yes indeed 5 feet. Got more space, but is also needed for bikes, toys etc.
For now it does it job, maybe in the future built a new one. Also one with 2x top instead of one.
But happy with it and time to do actual projects π
