Jay my bench finished at 59 1/2″ X approx. 22″ X 39″ high. So far I am thrilled with it and it hasn’t walked or racked on me.

I know what you mean about the wood, I have only a Home Depot where I live and I spent an embarrassing amount of time picking through God know how many 2 X 4’s x 10′ to get the amount I needed. I originally wanted to make it 72″ but the 12′ 2 X 4’s was worse than the 10′. I am not pleased with this HD at all but is the only game in town without having to drive 1 1/2 – 2 hours to hopefully find something better. I do not live in a wood haven.

With all said and done I am pleased with how it turned out.

I made this little bench in my barn before building the shop. I have added a vise on the front. After seeing Paul’s bench I may have to redo the top and add of few of his features and maybe make it a bit longer this go round…

Looks good Sandy. Do you find the storage under the top useful or does it just get filled with clutter? I have thought of putting some storage under my bench but just was not sure so I would value your experience with it.

    Thanks

I like the storage area. I put my bench hooks and a few other tools under there for easy access. and because the bench is so small it keeps those items off the top but still within easy reach. Also, After seeing some of the post about bench height I may have to raise mine a bit too. I’m 6’3 and the top of this one is about 36″. I’m thinking a couple more inches might make it more comfortable.

Added an end vise to my bench today. Lined the jaws with leather. I had a little bit of a twist in the end of the bench, but all good now.

Just have to drill some dog holes now.

    Cheers 😉

Really nice job there Ken. I’ve got a similar vise that’s going to be used the same way when I build my bench. I’ll let you off regarding the tidy look (far too much floor visible) and assume that it’s due to a pre-Christmas purge for working in there over the holiday season 😉

Greg, Serhiy, Jon, Dallas thanks guys. It’s a lot easier to rip narrow pieces now, nothing in the way.

    HaHa in my thread https://woodworkingmasterclasses.com/discussions/topic/keeping-the-workshop-tidy/

I said I would keep it tidy, and so far I have been true to my word.

Yeah Christmas and all that is just another day to me to be honest, so it will be in the workshop every day for me. 🙂 🙂

    Thanks guys 😉

Ken, I just added what i think is the same vise you have shown in your pictures on my bench. I’ve not been happy with the amount of flex i get in mine and it doesn’t hold things very good because of that. I picked up an old wood working vise at an antique store a couple of days ago and plan to change them out soon. I’ll post pictures of it later but it looks much more sturdy.
