Christopher Schwarz posted a link to this video on his blog the other day. It’s full of good ideas for holding your work without a vise. I love my Paul Sellers’ style bench and my vise, but there may be some that don’t have a vise yet. Plus there are ideas that can be useful even if you already have a vise.
7 December 2014 at 3:20 pm #121938I have the video. Its good. One dvd is about buying tools and how to refurbish them. The second is how to make saw horses and the workbench. The first dvd is great for beginners. What tools you need and so forth. The second dvd is real good too. I honestly got it to learn how to make his workbench. The P.S. bench is the first thing I ever made. I want a different style of bench. His saw horse and workbench are pretty simple and clever to make. His saw horse doesn’t have compound angles. He does address bench height and says something like the the best bench height is under the wood you are working on. I’m debating on how high to make it. I hear people say it should be low so you plane from your legs, then they are doing everything hunched over. I think mine is a bit lower than what P.S. says is ideal. I will probably keep it. I think Siemsen builds it at 32 inches high. I will keep my vise on it. I do like the ability to use the pegs and holdfasts. I think the one in the video he makes is 7 feet long. My first bench is pretty short. I am going to reorganize my place and make a 7 foot one.

I’m so glad I’ve settled on a few select species no more hunting around I have two good suppliers and pissed the other lieing thugs off. A lesson I’ve learned in this industry when a lumber yard starts telling you stories about how hard their done by other suppliers trying to justify their constant price increase and how it’s difficult to get readily available timbers again to justify their constant price increase and the govt. is against them blah blah blah STOP DEALING WITH THEM. They suckered me in for far too long and Aussie businesses needs to stop lying to their customers and pull their fingers out and trade honestly.
