[quote quote=553179]your plane blade needs to be sharper, when a plane starts behaving like that it’s time to sharpen up, I’ve found you need to sharpen more regularly with beech and oak, it should be pretty easy to plane though and enjoyable.[/quote]
@btyreman that was exactly my first thought! I sharpen my blade with a naniwa combination sto…[Read more]

@btyreman I can say 2 months later after almost daily use, washing and drying, that the inlay is holding up very well. Maybe I’ll respond at 12 months if I remember. The glue-to-wood ratio of the inlay itself is very high, so maybe that’s a factor. I will say, though, that I got a couple of cracks not related to the inlay. One is from where I…[Read more]

@ed thank you for your kind words. I did indeed use a knife to mark a new line at the lowest point, and the 2nd shoulder was better than the first, just still not what I’d hoped for … still learning
@btyreman at first I wondered if the inlay would weaken the joint, and I guess it does at least some, I just don’t know how much. I didn’t even…[Read more]

billstennett replied to the topic Should I glue in box linings? in the forum Woodworking Methods and Techniques 7 months, 2 weeks ago
@btyreman – the pine blocks in the first image were just there while I was fitting the linings to stop me accidentally pushing them all the way down while they were still tight and maybe not being able to get them out. Thise blocks form no part of the finished box.
The picture in my last post shows the finished linings with the lid propped up…[Read more]

@Craig & @btyreman – thank you both for your suggestions and for the fair warning that my question may elicit some strong opinions 🙂
I will experiment with Floetrol – it seemed more correct to me (since alkyd paints are waterbourne), but I read a lot of (strong) opinions online favouring Penetrol instead. I can attest from my own experience that…[Read more]

@ed, I really like your suggestion and have even considered this in the past. I know that Kreg has a universal fit track that is under $100. I could gamble on that and see if it works. I had also been mulling over a collapse-able outfeed table as well.
@btyreman – pine is much cheaper than plywood. The plywood I’m referring to is about…[Read more]

Thanks btyreman, I just found a new paint store, deals only in paints. I’ve been having trouble finding things here, just a different country. The different names of products throws me too.

@awesomeopossum74, no I live in Berkshire UK and the hygometer in the workshop is quite acurrate. VCI stands for Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor. It’s a compound that is supposed to prevent the formation of rust (some tool makers wrap their tools with paper impregnated with this compound to protect them from rust during transport and storage). I have…[Read more]

Thanks Derek and @btyreman
The purpose of making it sliding is to be sure that it won’t be on the way of something while working on the vice.

@btyreman Thanks for the pointer – I didn’t even know that microfinishing film existed, looks a lot less hassle than sticking down sandpaper.
One other question, how do the micron sizes of the film match up with grit sizes? Lower micron sizes would mean smaller particles which means higher grit?
