Hi..wall clock looks very good…..I have a collection of old oak and read your post with interest
I have, in my mind, a project to make our son a small bathroom cabinet based on the same design as the wall clock…..in fact while I think of it I could make my wife a wall clock for her home ‘office’Your finish with linseed oil…..was it boiled or raw? And beeswax….how did you buy that…..I’ve only seen sticks? PLEASE ADVISE
THANKS JOHN28 July 2018 at 6:30 pm #549672Hi thanks…..I am not looking to sell my collection just the two grooving planes, reason being I have a record 43 and two Record 50 plus two vintage screw stem grooving planes…..how many does a man need???
They were hardly used before I acquired them and cut a really quick groove compared to my others……just pick-em up and bingo job done.I’ve tried using my hollow and rounds without great success but use edge beads and ovalo’s ok.
Yes I share your concern regard their future use……people just reach for a router!!
Paul won’t even give a demo with the sticking board…….I can’t see why28 July 2018 at 12:40 pm #549667I tried to get Paul to demonstrate vintage moulding planes, if I could apply the rise in value thinking, I would be sitting on a tidy sum.
I have 70!! Picked up from different places.
Just recently tried to sell on eBay a pair or very nice grooving planes with adjustable width stop for £12 each. I received so little interest I decided to cancel sale. Trouble is when I fall off my perch my son will let them go for next to nothing or bin them??Attachments:

An Allen key is hard no need to do anything to it just grind sole
KEEP IT COOL BY DIPPING JUG WATER….DO NOT LET TIP COLOUR CHANGE TO BLUE OR YOU WILL DESTROY HARDNESS.
IMPORTANT TO SHARPEN IN SUCH A WAY AS THE UNDERSIDE IS SLOPING UP AT THE REAR (rather like putting your foot to the ground with heel up)MY ROUTER HAS A 1/4″ …6mm Allen key but you could use larger.
When using tool take small shaving not heavy……I can cut perfect stopped housing joints. Look on utube for more advice
Best of luck..john25 July 2018 at 2:54 pm #549595This router works just as good as a Stanley??
Rise and fall by bolt set between two layers of oak
Cutter from Alan key
Cutter has a groove cut with grinder
Large washer and nut with araldite adhesive
Cutter retained by 5mm eye bolt
Eye bolt retaining knob by forcing (in a vice) a nut….into a knob from ‘bits a bobs’ box
ALL DESIGNS FOUND ON UTUBE
Other fixed router from handrail offcut…using vintage 1/2″ firmer chisel and wedge
I use a home made wooden mallet to tap down iron and wedge. When groove complete use wedge set beside iron and tap up iron wedge….iron pops out easy

I would hold against a rising bench stop at front and a small screw into bench, at an angle, to the rear.
With a short piece there is a risk of ending with a convex face??
If you are simply smoothing you could try a scraper (u don’t say wood type)
29 May 2018 at 9:50 pm #548262Made my own rise and fall router works perfect…….for the cutter I use an Allen key…..that’s in uk not sure what they are called in other countries…..used hexagonal grub screws
6 May 2018 at 11:02 pm #540712Sold my Stanley rebate plane…..boxed complete for £90!!
Made my own ….works perfect …with vertical adjustment I currently only have a 1/4″ cutter but need to get round to making two larger sizes……I used Allen keys ground and sharpened.
I also have a poor man’s router……..I can cut a perfect stopped housing joint every time in minutes or face of tenon6 May 2018 at 10:38 pm #540699550$ that’s a fortune to me……I seem to pick up stuff freebie plus some on eBay. But have to say if I were buying from scratch it could cost a sizeable amount……..think “ever tfmake not buy” on some of your list don’t rush into it, be patient and things will come your way.
Look at my few pics of hand made stuff
Picture 1= Paul’s rebate plane made from scrap 3″x 2″ beech and my superb router using scrap wood….Alan key with vertical adjustment
Picture 2= other side of same
Picture 3= poor man’s router ( both of my routers work perfectly )
And 45deg edge chamfer plane using adjustable stops from a
modified vintage rebate plane
Plus scratch tool. Cutter from hack saw bladeBest John

See from the pics of mine ….it works abso perfect. Made from scrap beech 3″x 2″ on one side you will see body width increase glued on ( note the ovalo made with a vintage wooden plane) other side shows depth stop NOTE THE ESCAPEMENT SLOT!!
The bottom and side fences have a slot for adjustment….with 11/4″ long round head screws together with flat and spring washers.
I can get superp crisp curly shavings and a very accurate square rebate. You could do all of this with a vintage rebate plane…
Hope that helps….John
Ps couldn’t resist showing off my modified vintage rebate plane…..gives accurate corner 45deg chamfers…….and my rather superb and very accurate ….height adjustable router….again scrap timber and sharpened Allen key notched to receive washer for vertical adjustment
