General Finishes makes two clear products that I have used successfully,
Exterior 450 is a varnish with a harder finish, however your bare skin may stick to it, and it will feel warmer in the direct sunlight.
The Outdoor Oil leaves with you with a more natural wood feel, you won’t stick to it and it doesn’t warm up like the harder finishes do.
For preservation of the natural color, the 450 would probably do better, but will require some routine maintenance to keep the finish fresh.

28 March 2015 at 11:12 pm #126045Check out the Wood Whisperer on uTube. He has a series on a step stool sitting bench with a similar seat. That may have some good info to start with.
21 March 2015 at 6:32 am #125777I think it looks great! I need to get my stuff better organized like that!
20 March 2015 at 4:26 am #125720Thanks guys, I’ll give you a peek inside once I get all my lumber situated and organized. I have a great love for tools, but my attraction to lumber is even worse, lol.
19 March 2015 at 6:01 am #125689Thanks Gary, @gary, I stained them with a product called ReadySeal, I use it on a lot of outdoor furniture. I will usually reapply it about once a year to keep it looking nice, or I may just let it weather after a year or so. I can always come back and paint it later if I choose. Right now I really like the stain.
19 March 2015 at 5:56 am #125687Hey Frank, @frankm, I use Tightbond III, and have never had a failure with the Western Red Cedar. I also use a lot of Cypress, and have not had a failure there either. The Cypress does have a noticeable amount of oil in it, but I always wipe it down with Mineral Spirits before gluing it up.
19 March 2015 at 5:52 am #125685Finally had enough decent weather to get the doors stained and hung. I had to call the city code enforcement out to do a final inspection and I passed! Now I have finally moved in some shelves to store my lumber, and get it out of my garage. With room in the garage, I can finally get back in and start on some more woodworking projects.

22 February 2015 at 12:41 am #124931Make sure you clean all the packing grease off the vise before you install it and re-oil it. I didn’t do that with mine and it was a bit “sticky” at first. Since I cleaned and oiled it, it has worked flawlessly.
