The coffee table can use 4/4 for everything except the legs, which are supposed to be 2-1/4 inches square.
Also, FWIW, I’m in Austin, Texas. To be fair, I haven’t considered ordering lumber online, so that may be another option to pursue. My local place lets me pick through the available boards, and I can haul them home myself, so I’ve been doing that. I haven’t worked up the courage to try having lumber shipped.
5 January 2015 at 7:39 am #123074I know this is an old thread, but what type of wood did you end up using and how did you like it?
I’d like to use white oak, but as Scott mentioned in the thread earlier, it’s difficult to find anything bigger than 4/4. The salesman at the lumber yard told me that it’s because white oak takes longer to dry and nobody wants to leave thicker boards in a kiln that long. I’ll take him at his word. They can get me red oak or cherry, though. Thoughts? I have at least 3 big projects in the queue ahead of this one, so I have plenty of time to think about it and do some research before making a decision.

26 December 2014 at 8:48 pm #122721Thanks! I eyeballed the offset for drilling the tenons and was aiming for about 1/16″. At least that’s what I thought I was doing, but the final fit showed otherwise. 🙂 As soon as I started final assembly I could tell the holes weren’t placed accurately.
24 December 2014 at 4:37 am #122591Also, I learned that the depth guide on my plow plane won’t stay in place and so the groove was deeper than it was supposed to be. Lesson learned for next time. 🙂
19 December 2014 at 12:57 am #122314Thanks for the advice! I’m using quarter sawn white oak like Paul has in his videos. I recently bought a Veritas cabinet scraper and it arrived last week, but I haven’t had a chance to take it out of the box yet. I think I’ll take your advice and give it a shot on this project.
Thanks,
Darrin13 February 2014 at 4:50 am #27797Lots of good tips here. I haven’t been online much lately and am just catching up to all the suggestions. Thanks all!
(Also, if I get energetic I’ll format these suggestions and post them somewhere. :))
25 January 2014 at 12:19 am #26481Thanks. I think I will take your advice and start over with that board. Gives me some practice with the handsaw, too. 🙂
I’ve cut 7 or 8 more practice dadoes since my initial post. I have a tendency to make them too narrow, but I think I’m getting better at least. My latest dadoes are close enough that a few swipes with the plane does indeed fix it up.
