Definitely fo with the old distons, im assuming the guy has restored them, but look out for severely cracked handles and kinks in the saw. Bonus if the guy will sharpen them for a reasonable fee come time to do so. bonus bonus, if he will teach you to sharpen your own saws!

8 November 2015 at 11:30 pm #132146I placed the smooth side up on mine and have similar problems that you’ve described, just seems to be the nature of the compound. I chose to not remake it. I just used a chunk of scrap 3/4 plywood for my base. I’ve even seen a rough, somewhat flat peice of wood used with compound and no leather. Don’t get so worked up over it.
13 October 2015 at 12:59 am #131255That’s a beaut! Why sell it at all? I say buy the veritas and keep the other for sentiment.
23 September 2014 at 6:16 am #109624Thanks for all the input, I decided to return the plane seeing that I had no feasible way to flatten such a long length of metal and second I’d rather purchase something like that new after looking this one over and seeing the amount of work that would be required. The shelf liner trick will be useful on a couple of other planes I own. Again thanks for the input!
16 February 2014 at 6:19 am #27913Wesley,
I’ve a #4 1/2 that has similar problems, still has a very slight hollow right down the middle that starts just forward of the mouth and ends a few inches aft of the mouth. the rest of the plane rests perfectly flat. When I started the hollow was much much worse. Obviously it isn’t perfect but it does take a nice thin shaving. Point is don’t obsess on getting it “perfectly” flat, that will eventually happen, get it close and get to work.19 January 2014 at 5:15 am #26180So just wondering what could be done to straighten out the middle portion of the blade, it seems to me that I keep rounding the whole edge somehow. I don’t mind the camber too much but it is more than I want.
2 January 2014 at 6:41 am #25037Thanks for the comments everyone, I double checked the sole and found it slightly bellied. Corrected that and gave the iron another sharpening. Still cuts toward the middle with the iron set for a light cut, but once advanced enough it cuts a wide and thin enough shaving. Just gotta watch it and make sure I don’t hallow out the middle. Thanks again everyone.
