The site continues to perform poorly for me. I’m located in the southeastern US. Even with cloudflare fronting the site, I get frequent web server and gateway timeouts. It might be time to look into hosting a real time replica of the site and forums in the US. I thought cloudflare offered that, but maybe its an additional charge. I would participate in the forums more often if they weren’t so slow :/
You could, but I personally find cedar to be brittle and soft. Maybe you could make the frame out of cedar and use something harder for the top. If your cedar is fairly dense it shoukd work. I made my first bench out of pine and it’s great, so if your cedar is as dense as a 2×4 wall stud, it’ll be a fine bench.
Actually, i think it was this one…

I got this one from amazon. I haven’t had issues with shedding, but this is the only one ive ever had. I could have been lucky?

Paul did a video on a thicknessing jig that sounds ideal if you’re going to do small parts occasionally. You could add a bottom plate to the jig that would be easy to clamp to the bench top or a table top and still be out of the way of the plane.
maybe that’s adaptable to your needs?

I’m so happy about this thread. Ive made progress personally because of all of these tips and resources. The biggest concept I was missing was articulated by Shannon Rogers and also, very nicely here by @djenney:
“I quit trying to dig the saw through the wood and now support the weight of the saw more. I imagine I am just trying to slice the top layer of fibers in the kerf and not disturb the ones below.”
Supporting the weight of the saw using the leverage of the bottom handle horn to allow the saw, initially, to glide over the top layers of wood minimized the jarring, catching, and tearing almost immediately for me. Especially so for the larger saws due to their increased weight.
@bubba1, @mictau, @etmo, @eckyh,
Thank you so much for responding. I will take one of my pax saws (crosscut) and have it sharpened, while I attempt to sharpen the other (rip) myself following Paul’s instructions.
Also, I’ll work on the techniqes described by Ken while I try to find someone knowledgeable to mentor me or take a class from.
I will check out the Sannon Rogers video as well. Perhaps Paul will do a video on sawing basics one day too 🙂
Thanks again for the great help!
