I reshaped the iron, much better, I also made the relief deeper, shavings still clog up a little but it is working more like a plane now than a scraper, going to heat the iron next.
Need some oil, can motorcycle oil be used, how about a wood burning stove to heat the iron ?13 November 2017 at 1:39 am #364874Hi Debra ran into a few problems,
I made some mods to it, but the throat is too large where the blade sticks out of the sole,
and the shavings are getting stuck in there, also I think the iron is too straight across the middle,
the bevel is good, easy to sharpen Just have to get more accurate with the shape.
Here are some pics.I had to cut the plane in three sections because when i first finished it the blade was too close the the toe of the plane. So I cut it into three sections, rearranged the pieces and then glued them together, when it dried I reshaped the plane completely, and it is closer to what it should be. I must have done something wrong when i made the piece for the throat ?
I will keep at it.Attachments:

I’ve been working on my first ever mortise and tennon. I’ve watched lots of Paul’s videos and it looks as if the chisel glides into the wood like butter. I am working with some sort of pine that’s quite old. I’ve sharpened my chisels on oil stones and stropped – to a point where I feel it’s pretty sharp.
When I start my mortise, I use Pauls technique he teaches in his videos, but I am unable to advance anywhere near as quick through the wood. I can’t understand why it’s feeling so difficult given it’s pine of some type. Could this be down to my chisel actually not being sharp enough or just bad technique?

I have had similar trouble, I would suspect your chisels and your technique, lol
I made a mistake sharpening my chisels using arkansas stones, I put windshield washer fluid on the stone, ( ran out of glass cleaner) and it erroded the soft stone, to wear you cant use that side.
Purchase eze lap diamond stones 2 x 6 ” 250, 600, 1200 I cannot believe the difference, using just water now, so much faster and easier. I also messed up the original bevel, some of the chisels I accidentally put a micro bevel on them, Fixed them up nice with the diamond stones, easy as pie now. Well At least they cut into the fibers instead of pushing through them.

31 October 2017 at 3:11 am #345066I just bought 3 eze lap diamond stones, holy moly, what a relief I finally have my chisels sharp,
I was struggling with pushing through the wood instead of cutting it, couldnt understand it. I rounded the camber too much, had micro bevels on one or two chisels, and I used windshield washer fluid on my arkansas stones, I think the chemicals in there dissolved my soft stone, Spent a good hour fixing my chisels, ready to make stuff again. Good Feeling fixing your own mistakes.29 October 2017 at 6:00 pm #344133[quote quote=344060]That’s a nice simple sharpening stone set up you’ve got there. The stones aren’t recessed into the base are they? Paul’s sharpening holder is on my to do list, but the thought of all the routing pushes it further down on the list.

Hello, If you use a flat granite block, lay a piece of paper towel on it, then place your stone on top of the paper towel, the towel, and more so when it is wet from the glass cleaner, will hold it in place for sharpening. The towel also absorbs the liquid so it will keep your bench dry.

29 October 2017 at 2:23 am #343811Ah, Those kind of dividers, lol, must be getting punchy. i actually don’t have a set yet,
Thank You28 October 2017 at 3:57 am #343169Hello, I don’t know what you mean by dividers ?
I have been trying to make dovetails everyday, gaining some momentum, still experimenting with the pitch. For Some reason I had pretty good success with a 1:4 ratio, Just order some diamond sharpening stones eze lap 250, 600 and 1200
I may have ruined my soft Arkansas Stone, using windshield washer fluid, instead of window cleaner.25 October 2017 at 9:04 am #340458I dont think so, I think part of my struggle was not knowing how to use them, removing waste material properly, technique, I’m doing better with them, paying more attention to details, and just practicing.
Watching the box making series now, have part 6,7,8 to go.
Making a box with a sliding lid, first joint came out very good, using Maple 3/8″ stock for the long pieces, and 5/8-3/4 for the short ones.22 October 2017 at 10:17 pm #338879I am still making mods to my poplar bench
here are a couple of pics

25° Bailey Chisels, Polished them look good now, about 3/16″ into the work, it seems like the texture of the fibers changes and is really hard. Wondering about Moisture Content, or Like you said Half way through the job they are getting dull,
Could be Im not putting a sharp enough edge on it, using Arkansas Stone, Course Medium and Washita
Starting using a leather strap and a polishing compound, much better.Seems like it takes a long time to chop through. I will try a different wood species and see if that changes anything.
