Thanks, Matt.
I found the splines to be very difficult to make. I tried making short ones but they all ended up wedge-shaped. The easier method in Paul’s video is to make one long one that can be planed to thickness.
Anyways, I had some 1/16″ wood laying around that I used for the spline. I had bought this material years ago to use as a face-plate on a guitar amplifier but it was too thick for that. It worked out great as spline material. I think I got it at Hobby Lobby or some craft store. Maybe at a home improvement center.
I started the cuts on the corner with a small saw but then went down the cut again with a bigger 16″ back saw that has a wider kerf. Seemed to work.
Thanks again.
Here are some build photos. The glue-up was full of trepidation as the splines refused to co-operate. I had to cut out the dovetails for the splines with a larger saw to make them fit. I had a tough time planing them to size so it was easier for me to cut a larger kerf.
I also made a little shooting board. I still have to get the hang of it.
I used scrap wood too so I had some filling to do but it all look fine after I planed it smooth. Paint, again, covers all sins 🙂

My suggestion is to taper the inside that goes along the longest side. Then the two outside faces and the face that the shelf attaches to are straight.I just like the way this looks. I could model it for you if you attach the Sketchup file.
Also, play around with how high up or down the shelf goes. It is good where it is but it is always helpful to try it on paper/computer before you start cutting wood.
Sorry I didn’t see your post. I don’t check in here so often anymore.
I copied the design for my plane from Paul’s video and more so from Greg Merritt’s drawing.
I think I copied the dimensions at 2″ wide by 2″ tall by 5″ long.

if you have the cash you can buy the whole Hands set on DVD from Benchcrafted.
Some of the videos are on Youtube too. I watched the Cavan cabinetmakers. Worth a look.
For other woodworking related videos, there are ones of a man making a curragh and another of a man making a boat.
Search “hands rte” and you’ll find a load to look at.
