The top will finish at about 1 1/4” or a bit over. The glue up of a sliding dovetail would be tricky. I’d rather not have grooves running out to the edges or have peoples’ fingers finding them while feeling under the table. If I’m misunderstanding what you mean please let me know.

I don’t want to start a discussion of the merits of the metric vs imperial system, but I do most my work in inches and feet. Would it be reasonable to add the option to change between the units? I’d be happy to buy you a coffee for the trouble.

22 February 2022 at 2:00 pm #749722Thanks Colin,
The veneering strategy is one I have considered, but I also don’t have any 1/2″ plywood to work with. I do have 1/4″ cherry veneered plywood but I have worries that the top layer is too thin and will wear terribly over the years. Any experience with such things?
The increase in lumber prices is really problematic.
12 January 2021 at 5:10 pm #695302I also have an 044 and have sometimes found using a cutting gauge or knife to pre-score the groove to be very helpful when running the larger channels. Assuming everything else is set correctly, and your iron isn’t slightly bowed, that usually does the trick for me.
On occasion I’ve also gone back to a honing guide just to make sure the angle is absolutely dead to rights if I’m having trouble.
I hope this might be helpful, but it seems you’ve done most everything I try first.

24 August 2020 at 2:23 pm #675306Hi David,
I believe the Eclipse vises are what is recommended by many here. I’m also in the US and found them to be readily available on Amazon (link below). The 9″ or 10″ would both work well but I think the 7″ would be too small for a front vise. Hope this is helpful. Had to edit the link a bit so it would work so you’ll want to just copy and paste everything between the arrows.

24 August 2020 at 12:30 pm #675298Thank you all for the help! After looking more closely at the iron seated in the plane, it does appear to be riding on the back edge instead of the cutting edge. I’ll spend some more time with a guide to flatten the curve out and that should fix the issue.
24 August 2020 at 4:34 am #675228I did get a burr but it was smaller than I was used to doing it by hand.

This is something I considered and am toying with. The benchtop is 3 1/8″ thick and the vise face is only 2 3/8″ tall so I would need to recess the underside for the vise and mechanism after adding the extension to make up the space. Certainly a doable solution and one that would be quite attractive when complete.

That’s an interesting suggestion I had not considered. Thank you very much for the idea.
