I’m continuing today and hope to get on to the legs.14 January 2015 at 7:42 pm #123533Regarding aprons guys. I’ve laminated e.thing *(and also have all the top done)
However one of the aprons/the well (they’re all the same dimensions -3 lengths of 2.4m x2x4’s) has twist.
I’ve been trying to get my head around where exactly I neeed to plane as not all have twisted but have, I think, satisfactorily flattened one side.
Then I turned it over! Needless to say this is the last one!
Hmm… should I begin to level this out too or leave it for later?I’ve watched all the vids up to here and may have missed s.th.
cheers
8 January 2015 at 9:36 am #123232Never heard of Great Barr or your supplier Vips – are you in the UK?
A professional woodworker I spoke to didn’t rate B&Q’s stock at all but I’m reliant on s.where v. near at the moment. I’m doing some hardcore planing I now realise there are a lot of knots!7 January 2015 at 1:31 pm #123189I bought my workbench timber from B&Q 2 wks ago.
29 47x100mmx2.4m -plus £20 delivery was £180.
I am in the process…5 January 2015 at 9:04 am #123079Hi guys.I’ve been gluing up the top slabs for my workbench and am bemused by the selection of PVA glues- and the amazingly different prices.I’m in England so I’m just wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a brand that does the job but is reasonably priced.Saw one yesterday sold as “contractors’ glue” which was £12 for about 5 litres.I bought a litre for £6 and naturally it’s now nearly all gone!! Will post photo when finished.
Happy New Year.30 December 2014 at 10:02 am #122814Well 2c’s is sth Mooncabbage. What I’m doing is trying to plane 47×100 mm x 2.4 m lengths for the top.
I’m on the 100mm flat face and trying to prepare it for gluing.Using a 2inch wide iron on a #4 Stanley doesn’t seem a logical choice for a beginner. The lengths I haven’t cut are straighter.29 December 2014 at 4:26 pm #122766I’m also starting a bench Mooncabbage. I’ve got 47x100mm x2.4m lengths. I’ve got a shallow set on a #4Stanley and thought it was going well until I tried to join 2 to get an idea of the effect. They’re definitely not flush.
How square is acceptable?
I’ve tried laying the plane sideways and looking for light.Does it need to be that exact? This is going to be a long night :o(25 December 2014 at 9:57 am #122696Merry Christmas Paul, Phil and John.
My “holiday” at the castle was the best I’ve ever had.
Wood for bench delivered next Monday.
Peace and best wishes to all the other guys from the course
and everyone visiting the site22 December 2014 at 7:44 pm #122470Had an old brassbacked saw from ebay that I scrubbed with v coarse emery paper then put in a bath of pickling ( all I had ) vinegar overnight. I went at it with a pretty soft brass brush a couple of times and next day it was as clean as as a whistle. This particular saw had some fairly deep pitting on it which obviously doesn’t disappear but rust ? what rust?
What most surprised me was the pistol grip handle.A grey, cracked lacquer serviceable piece of wood was transformed with 4 coats of Danish oil into a lovely 2 tone brown black.I’d never used ( or heard of )it before this site. Rock on with the vinegar and it’s lovely with onions!22 December 2014 at 7:31 pm #122468Hey Barry, I’m just having a look to find out what is POISONOUS in the breadboard stakes.
Yours are BEAUTIFUL. Lovely wood.If s.one had gave me one of those i’d be delighted.
I gave my little niece my first attempt at Paul’s Shaker candlebox for an (early ) Christmas present. Her mum and co. thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. You’re looking at it with a critical eye so the next will be better. It’s a work of art- really -
