Happy birthday and congratulations on a fine saw, @ken.
I want to find a good tenon saw myself, for dovetails and such. I see there are generally two kinds, rip saw and crosscut. Is it really necessary to have two, or is this where Paul’s sharpening method comes in?
Thanks, guys. 2″ wide iron. I should be able to find one.
As for stores, availability is not great in little Norway and prices are steep. The few tools I have so far I’ve bought from amazon or ebay. I have also ordered some chisels from workshopheaven which should arrive soon. If anyone can recommend other sites that offer international shipping, please do.
Ken, I see what you mean about loving planing. It was a great feeling when I finally got some clean shavings going. Love the sound! Very meditative, I think. 🙂
Welcome to the club, Franco. 🙂
I’m now getting much better shavings. I’m sharpening using a guide now, which I think helped a lot. However, I’m still tinkering with getting even shavings as the middle seems to cut more than the sides. Looking more closely at the edge, I see a curve. I know Paul creates a small arch, but I’m wondering if mine is too much and that I should go for a straighter edge. (See pic.)
Also, it seems I at some point sharpened the wrong side…, which has created a second, small bevel. I assum the only remedy is to grind it flat again? (see pic)

I want to focus on setting up my tools correctly. It seems that is one of the most important aspects of woodworking with hand tools. Thankfully I’m airing my mistakes in this wonderful community.
Take a look at the frog position of my plane, how is this looking?

As soon as I’m back in my little home workshop I will start over, with sharpening, attaching the iron the RIGHT way ( 🙂 ), and addressing the frog, the sole and work gradually towards a good cutting depth. Hopefully I will report back soon with some nicely planed shavings.
Much obliged.
