I’ve ordered a Draper 45241 250 mm Smoothing Plane:
I’ve lost count of how many auctions I’ve lost. Shame really I couldn’t get hold of one of those nice planes. I’ll probably come to regret this but I really want to get started on my bench.
How soon will I come to regret this?
I don’t think you need worry too much. This looks like it could be made into a reasonably decent plane if you’re prepared to put some effort into it. You’ll have to spend an afternoon lapping the sole etc. but you’d probably have to do that with almost anything you found on the bay of E. What you’ve got there is a great opportunity to set up a plane from scratch without having to worry about it being too expensive or difficult to get hold to muck up. I think you’ll find you’ll develop a real affection for this tool once you’ve made it your own.
6 February 2014 at 11:34 pm #27378Don’t give up with eBay. Like you I have missed out on numerous Stanley/Record smoothing planes but I did pick up a lovely old (100 years+) coffin plane for £4 that works a treat. It has a wonderful feel and the name stamps of it’s previous owners give it a sense of history.
7 February 2014 at 12:04 am #27381There seem to be several nice planes for less than 40pounds listed as ‘Buy it Now”.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_from=R40&_nkw=stanley+no+4+plane&rt=nc&LH_BIN=1I just ordered a Stanley No 4 as well. It shipped today. I took the “buy it now” option and got it for about $37, shipping and all. It looks to be a 40’s era plane from an estate auction. We will see. A couple of years ago, I bought a new Stanley No 4 just to get started and I still use it. The frog doesn’t adjust as well as the older ones, and it has a plastic tote that I do not like, but it’s okay. I also bought a Kobalt smoothing plane from Lowe’s. It is heavy for it’s size and is better than the new Stanley in some respects, and much worse in others. The tote on the Kobalt seems to loosen easily. I turned it into a scrub plane and use it often, but I’m really excited about getting an old Stanley No 4. We’ll see…… Please let us know how it goes with you!
How you search on eBay is a trick as well. The following search (paste into search box) …
(stanley,bailey,record,sargant,sargent,miller,falls,craftsman) (4,41/2,”4 1/2″,409,410) plane
… will find all the size 4 or 4 1/2 planes by Stanley, Bailey, Sargent, Miller Falls, or Craftsman
Here is a link to the search for buy now:
