Well It has been about 8 months in the making, with more than 100 hours of labor, but I have FINALLY finished my workbench! It is made from 2x4s from The Home Depot and is 6′ long, exactly 35″ tall and 27″ deep with a 20″ deep bench top. I have a face vise mounted with 8/4 hard maple as the vise pads, which are 14″ wide and so far 1 hole bored for the holdfasts (I figure it would be a good idea to bore the holes as I need them, so I don’t have holes in wrong or useless spots). Maybe down the road I will install a tail vise, first I will see how I like it without one.
I am very proud of myself for building it, especially with no power tools. I was able to get every piece dead flat and dead square (especially the top). I learned a great deal of techniques and skill from building the bench and now I am ready for the journe(r)y ahead of me.
Thank you Paul Sellers for sharing your knowledge and love of working wood and Thank you Steve Follis for all of your help and for my first set of chisels! I will never forget it.

19 March 2014 at 3:05 pm #29050Your time and efforts were well spent, that’s a beautiful bench. Hope I can make something half as nice. First class work Nathan.
Cheers
Very nice. Well done and now don’t worry and enjoying putting saw and chisel marks all over it 🙂
Have you seen on Paul Sellers bench the huge area that has been cut out to the right of his vice from years and years of cutting boards in that area? Next time they do a overhead camera angel look to his right side of the vice.
I am used to cutting my boards on the left side of my vice and so that’s where I have some saw marks.

Do you find it high enough at 35″19 March 2014 at 10:22 pm #29065Thank s every body for the compliments!
@Rusty, I had to go through several stacks at a couple locations, to find clean, straight 2x4s. I am sure the guys working there were glad to see me go.
@mexiquite, I have seen that spot on Paul’s bench! and I already got a few marks on the top from planing and cutting the vise pads. nothing can stay pretty forever!
@David Gill, I do find it plenty high enough, I am about 5’8″. In fact, I might cut an inch or 2 off the legs. When I was planing tall/higher pieces, I found myself using my arms more than body pressure. But I am going to do a few projects on the bench before I make any decisions.20 March 2014 at 12:39 am #29071Congrats with your new bench Nathan, nice work, don’t worry about any marks it’s working bench not a dinning table)) Happy woodworking)
