Anyone attending The North of England Woodworking Show in Harrogate tomorrow?
If you are and would like to meet up and give me some advice on how to finish my workbench and Paul’s walking cane in time for Christmas, that would be great (not panicking at all…).
21 November 2013 at 5:28 pm #21929I might be there on Saturday. It’s a 2.5 hour drive from me but I want to check out some planer/thicknessers and see some of the demonstrations. I think Paul blogged about being there at some point over the weekend, so you can ask him about the cane yourself if you can track him down. Can’t find the post on his blog now though – search isn’t working.
Have a good time there tomorrow. Post about how you found it. I’ve only got one tip about going to woodworking shows: leave your credit card at home!
George.
23 November 2013 at 8:19 am #22106Quick update for anyone thinking of attending the show.
There are a couple if real gems here. Te old tool store had some real bargains on good hand tools. I could have spent a fortune. Of all the stands at the show this was the busiest. I somehow doubt there will be much stock left today.
British Hardwoods also had some good prices on hobby packs of oak. I picked up a large pack for £10.
George, only Record Power were displaying planer thicknessers, but their PT107 looks pretty good. Axminster were displaying some of their power tools, but nothing that interested me.
I spent some time comparing Quangsheng and Lie Nielsen planes (not easy when they were at different ends of the hall). The Lie Nielsens are beautiful, but at less than half the price I think the Quangshengs are really good value.
If you’re into woodturning there’s lots to see. In fact it felt more like a wood turners fair at times.
Was it worth the trip? For me it was only 20 minutes away so yes, but If I had to drive more than an hour to get there I think I would have been disappointed.
24 November 2013 at 9:09 pm #22213I attended the show on Saturday, it was a 1 hour 45 min drive but it gave me the chance to meet up with Sheldon a friend I made after meeting him on the candle box and wall unit course I attended with Paul , It was also good to meet up with Paul again and to meet Phil, We had an enjoyable lunch.
Like Dave I also bought a pack of wood from British hardwoods, (will use some for making the canes) I also bought a Narex rasp , tried it this morning it does seem very rough.
I was surprised A how busy the show was and B how old most attendees were. I think Phil was the youngest guy there.Attachments:

The barns themselves are very old and impressive.
I guess it is the largest show of its type in the UK I am sure you would not be disappointed25 November 2013 at 10:17 am #22239David looks like you had a good day at the northern show.
Michael Temple Cressing Barns is worth a look. It’s a good place to go in it’s own right. With all the woodworking stuff even better.
Great to see and talk to the gurus of woodworking world.25 November 2013 at 10:22 am #22240I had to spend Saturday prepping a room for plastering on Sunday so didn’t make it to the show. Glad you guys enjoyed it though!
@mtaylor The show at Cressing Temple is pretty good. I went in 2012 and really enjoyed it. Many of the demonstrators and exhibitors who were at the North of England show are also at the European Woodworking Show. The location is fantastic, too.George.
Hi Michael.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I received an email a couple of weeks back from the European woodworking organisers. It seems that they have made the decision to host the show every two years from now (next show in 2015) and that the future of cressing temple barns itself as the venue is somewhat uncertain. It might be worth keeping an eye on their website to see if this changes though.
