Good to here it John. It does feel good when things start to click. Keep at it.
One month ago I ordered the wood working course from paul sellers. I did not have a work bench so the first thing I had to do was build the european work bench in the course. I had to do the last thing first sounds crazy but what a learning curve. My through tenons looked like a dog chewed on them but they work. I made all kinds of mistakes but I learned. If you keep trying your water will turn into wine.
I had really high expectations for my first bench, until I started making it. Anything that could have gone wrong went wrong but the final product is rock-solid (and a billion times better than a Black & Decker Workmate).
I learned that it really doesn’t matter what a workbench looks like as long as it does its job well.
Dave and Frank now you both have sturdy benches you will wonder how you managed before without one. Well Done
I got quite frustrated at this and was in fact composing a āWhat am I doing wrongā post in my head while I was chopping my 5th practice mortise when I noticed the chisel was behaving just like Paulās did on the video. Iām still not sure what I was doing differently but now it works and before it did not! Not perfect by a long shot but I can cut an acceptable mortise now with some repeatability.
It comes with practice, at least that’s what I hear.
