I have been fighting some aromatic cedar for a little while now, not much…just over 6 bf. Knots, hard grain going into softer grain, reverse grain. This wood has thrown everything at me! The worst is tear out, sometimes up to an eighth of an inch maybe a little more when i accidentally tear into some rising grain before a knot or what have you.
I came to the realization that the No. 80 was basically going to save my project, got one in the mail shortly after. To combat this ridiculously deep tear out i would actually almost completely ignore the direction of the grain as it presented itself. Instead i found that skewing my plane and running it tangentially or completely perpendicular to the grain resulted in….tear out, BUT it was significantly less! So much less in fact that just a few passes with the cabinet scraper would take it out completely.
Project back on tract, couldn’t be happier. 🙂
