Thanks Max, that makes it much clearer.
I use the term “rail” for a (typically horizontal) cross member that connects two legs or two styles, in the case of a door frame. A “shoulder” is the flat surface of the dovetailed part that rests against the outside surface of the recessed piece. This is really hard to put into words. I googled it and found a picture giving the terms used for mortise and tenon, but the same shoulder term can be used for sliding dovetails.
