I was looking to buy a new bandsaw and when I talked to Paul on the phone last week, he mentioned grizzly bandsaws. Today I purchased G0513ANV 17″ 2 HP Bandsaw, Anniversary Edition – Grizzly on ebay (they’re sold out now). They still have them on sale ($100 off) on their website. This one allows for resaw of up to 12″ boards. The 17″ description is deceiving (at least for me a new buyer it was). I thought it meant that was the size of the board I could saw, but it means the size of the table 17″ x 17″.
Paul said that 1 HP would be fine for a while, but if you’re going to be doing woodworking for the long run, he recommended a bigger HP 2.
That’s all I can remember from our conversation.
From my own research, one thing about lower HP means you won’t be able to resaw thicker boards. Example 1HP http://www.grizzly.com/products/14-Deluxe-Bandsaw-Anniversary-Edition/G0555LANV has a 6″ cutting height and the 2HP I bought has a 12″ cutting height. Of course, it cost me almost twice as much.
I was looking to buy new and didn’t ask Paul about used ones. I’m sure he probably has a lot to say about used bandsaws.
I’ve attached a picture of the bandsaw I bought.
