My understanding is that all 4 1/2s came with 2 3/8″ irons (same as the Nos. 6 and 7). Older 5 1/2s had 2 1/4″ irons. I can’t remember when Stanley increased these planes’ width by 1/8″ though. If your broken iron is 2 1/4″ wide it’s a nonstandard sized replacement.
2 3/8″ irons aren’t hard to find. Try eBay. You can copy and paste the following on the eBay search line:
plane (iron, blade, cutter) (“2 3/8”, “4 1/2”)
