I haven’t made one (yet) but my best guesses would be:
1) First step is a different height because Paul determined that was an ideal height for the first step coming from the ground–it is a shorter step, about half the distance of the others, making for an easy “mount” onto the ladder. More importantly, it provides much needed structural stability to the legs which might otherwise bow/bend inwards/be weaker. I imagine you could modify the design if you felt so inclined. Look at the ladder and imagine what it would look like if the first step were a foot off the ground. Not so rock-solid.
2) I see trestle hinges on Amazon–you are right, they look expensive at $75. However, you can find the same ones (or similar) on eBay for much less (they seem to be something you get in the U.K. and less common in the U.S. You could also try amazon.co.uk and see if you can find any sellers that ship to the U.S. –Again, these hinges seem to be more of a “U.K. thing” and you would seemingly have better luck tracking down a supplier there who will ship to the U.S.
3) I just watched the last couple of minutes of the final episode and the platform does appear to “flop” a bit (it is mounted a bit more snugly within the frame so “flop” seems like an overstatement. I also think it provides a useful place for a wall hook to hold it so it may not be an issue should you store it that way (if it is bothersome to you).
Lastly, I agree with Harvey–spend $15 to subscribe for a month and watch as many videos as you can stand/consume! You will no doubt learn a lot.
