@NJC, I made a scrub plane out of a really cheap old Craftsman plane. This plane was from the late 60’s and has an aluminum frog in it – so not one I cared much about.
I have a 4 diamond plate sharpening system that I use. Mine goes from extra course to extra fine. I used the extra course plate (free handed) rotating the blade in a figure 8 pattern – which caused the outer edges of the blade to round slightly. It was pretty quick and I found that I didn’t need to excessively round the blade. When I protrude the blade through the mouth of the plane, it is obvious that the outer edges are rounded over – meaning the blade edges don’t contact the wood. I get great results from this plane that was otherwise one I wouldn’t use.
The other key is to strop it. I have a mirror like bevel on this plane blade now. Works great.
